Alleviate Arthritis Pain with Food
Did you know there are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions? Arthritis is joint pain, and people of all ages and races can experience arthritis. Symptoms include decreased range of motion, pain, stiffness, and swelling. Treatments can include joint surgery, natural remedies, and medications. - Fruits and vegetables are chock-full of antioxidants, which help the immune system. Eat, at least, 2 cups of fruit and 2 cups of vegetables per meal.
- Nuts are full of monounsaturated fat, fiber, and protein. Eat a handful of nuts per day.
- Olive oil contains oleocanthal, a compound that can help lower inflammation and pain. It also contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fat and antioxidants. Eat 2 to 3 tablespoons per day, either for cooking, in salad dressings, or as an ingredient in dishes.
- Onions may reduce heart disease risk, inflammation, and LDL (bad cholesterol).
- Salmon, sardines, and tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation. Eat, at least, 3 to 4 ounces of fish twice per week.
In addition to helping fight inflammation, some of the above foods can also boost the immune system and strengthen bones. Foods to eliminate or cut back on include processed foods, salt, and alcoholic drinks.
